The Neighborhood Mediation Task Force was formed in September, 1996, by the Village of Orland Park's Community Relations Commission. The goal was to help village residents settle conflicts by employing the methods of mediation and conciliation.
What is Mediation?
Mediation in a method for resolving disputes or disagreements between neighbors. It is an alternative to law suits, feuds or living with suppressed rage and resentment.
How does mediation work?
Under the guidance of a neutral third party (the mediator and a co-mediator), disputing neighbors are given the opportunity to meet and discuss their problems. They "hear each other out." The mediator listens to both sides, guides the discussion and points out common ground. The mediators then assist the parties in developing their own solutions and agreements.
Does mediation work?
Yes, it does. Both sides come to an agreement on terms that they, themselves have negotiated. Since both parties have ownership of the ideas, they usually live up to their word.
What kinds of problems can be resolved through mediation?
The mediation process is useful for almost any type of dispute, except situations where there is a violation of the law. Some typical problems where mediation is used are:
What is conciliation?
In an initial telephone interview, an assigned Task Force mediator determines whether the problem is suitable for mediation. Information on the relevant pertinent facts affect this decision. In some cases, it is possible to resolve problems by informality discussing the matter with both parties in separate phone calls. This procedure is called conciliation.
If, however, the disputing parties determine that mediation offers the best hope for a permanent settlement, the mediator will arrange for a formal mediation meeting at the earliest convenience of both parties.
Who are the mediators?
They are Village residents, like yourself. They volunteer time and effort to help other resolve conflicts and live in harmony with their neighbors.
How were the mediators trained?
The mediators have received professional training from experienced, practicing mediators. The training followed the guidelines that were established by the U.S. Justice Department. Mediators were taught not to take sides, not to impose judgments, and not to dictate solutions or outcomes.
Will I know my mediators?
Absolutely not. The mediators who are chosen for a case do not know persons on either side of the conflict. They must have no previous knowledge of the situation.
Is the mediation confidential?
Yes. Mediators receive special training on the importance of secrecy. They follow strict rules and procedures to assure that information about the case is kept confidential.
Where are the mediation meetings held?
The meeting will be in a safe and completely neutral location -- in the Village Hall or Police Headquarters.
Is there a charge?
No. Mediation services are available free to all residents of the Village of Orland Park.
